LOST OVER 4 MILLION VND DUE TO ONE MISTAKE WHEN TAKING THE BUS IN ITALY: A "PAINFUL" LESSON EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW! ♂️

❌ THE STORY OF "BUYING A TICKET BUT STILL GETTING FINED"
Many Vietnamese tourists in Italy are very confident, buying paper tickets from automatic machines (about 1.5€ – 1.7€/ticket) and sitting comfortably on the bus. But when ticket inspectors (Verificatore) board to check, they immediately issue a fine of 40€ - 50€ per person (a family of 4 loses nearly 5 million VND!).
The bitter reason: The ticket has not been "ACTIVATED" (Validated). In Italy, any explanation like "I am a tourist and didn't know" is completely useless to traffic inspectors!
THE "CONVALIDA" TRICK – MUST VALIDATE UPON BOARDING!
In Italy, there is a mandatory term you must remember: "Convalida il biglietto" (Validate the ticket). The paper ticket you buy at an automatic machine or a tobacco shop (Tabacchi) is only valid once it has been timestamped. If not stamped, it is just a piece of scrap paper and you are considered a fare evader!
Standard 3-step process when taking a Bus/Tram in Italy:
1️⃣ Buy tickets BEFORE boarding: Buy at automatic machines at large stations or tobacco shops marked with a T (Tabacchi). Never wait until you get on the bus to buy from the driver, as the price will be double, or sometimes the driver will not sell them.
2️⃣ Find the ticket stamping machine as soon as you step on the bus: The machine is usually a small black, yellow, or green box hanging near the door. Insert the side of the ticket with the arrow into the slot; the machine will make a "click" sound and print the date, time, and station on it.
3️⃣ Check the ink: If the machine is broken and cannot print, use a ballpoint pen to manually write the current date and time on the ticket and report it to the driver immediately to avoid being wrongly fined. This ticket is usually valid for 90 - 100 minutes, allowing you to transfer as many bus lines as you want during that time.
POCKET THESE TIPS TO AVOID "FINE TRAPS" IN ITALY
Not just buses, the transport system in Italy has many other "strange" regulations:
Regional Trains (Treno Regionale): If buying a paper ticket at the station, you must find the stamping machine in the station lobby to stamp it before boarding the train. If buying an electronic ticket via an App (Trenitalia, Omio), you must click the Check-in button on the app before the train departs; otherwise, the ticket is still considered invalid!
Use Tap & Go (Bank card payment): Currently, major cities have card readers for Visa/Mastercard or Apple Pay directly on vehicles. It is very CONVENIENT, but EACH CARD IS ONLY FOR 1 PERSON. Do not tap one card multiple times for the whole family; the machine will error out, and those who follow will be considered fare evaders.
Keep your phone charged: If buying tickets online, ensure your device does not run out of battery. When checking tickets, a dead phone means you have no ticket and you will immediately receive a cash fine on the spot.
